Digital Addiction

web_addict-1
The World Wide Web brings together all types of people, and is constantly growing and expanding every day. We are now experiencing a developing problem with the number of social and gaming sites being created. The unique designs and abilities of these sites are creating a phenomenon and problem called digital/internet addiction. Many may not see this to be problematic but it’s developing real fast as new and more ways to connect your self to different people. According to studies, digital/internet addiction is mainly found among college students living alone for the first time or students living a great distance from family and friends. In some cases of digital addiction, many people have lost their jobs, grades, homes, marriages, and even had car accidents for those who cannot stop texting to the web while driving. Due to constantly surfing the web while at work and school, it is disconnecting them from the more important things in life and a real face-to-face social life. Some people may have a problem with this idea of being addicted, but how many times have you checked your social sites today? Is this taking over your social life? In a week, some people may interact on the web more then they would in person. Imagine if we all had this problem, what would become of our society and what would become of our social life as humans? As of now, this problem is not yet recognized as a major health problem such as alcohol or drugs, but treatments have been developed to help people reestablish their life from the web. eCampus news reported that, “Nonstop video-game playing and web surfing has led to the opening of a new internet addiction center in the United States, and experts on computer overuse say they expect web addiction soon will be treated like any other addiction, such as alcohol or drug abuse.”

So think about it how many times per day are you updating or checking your social site, and how is it affecting your life?

These are some of the most addictive social sites today:

  • Facebook

  • Twitter

  • Myspace

  • MyYearbook

  • Skype

  • World Of Warcraft

  • Oovoo

  • Formspring
